Abstract

610,867. Metal-to-glass seals. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. April 17, 1946, No. 11784. Convention date, Aug. 21, 1941. [Class 36] A metal-to-glass seal is formed by pressing the end of a metal body through a pre-heated glass sheet, the metal body being heated, as by high-frequency induction, sufficiently to melt the contacting portion of the glass. As shown in Fig. 3, the severed disc-portion 2b of the glass forms a closure-member for the metal body 1, the separated portion 2a being removed after cooling. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the flanged edge 7a of an outer glass sleeve 6 is sealed to a tubular metal body 5 by pressing the latter through the pre-closed end of the sleeve. In this case, the part 7b of the glass is removed after cooling. The metal surface required to adhere to the glass may be pre-coated with enamel and the other surface coated with material, such as graphite, to prevent adhesion. Porous glass may be used, and in all cases the relative coefficients of expansion of the metal and glass are chosen according to the location of the seal on the inner or outer surface of the metal body. When the relative thermal expansion of the metal and glass are substantially different, as in the case of a copper body 12, Fig. 7, and a lead-glass closure 13, a band 15 of high tensile strength may be fitted around the lower end of the metal body.
