610,297. Electrostatic instruments. ETABLISSEMENTS S.E.M. April 9, 1946, No. 10848. Convention date, Jan. 22. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 17, 1946.] Drawings to Specification. [Class 40 (iv)] A condenser microphone or loudspeaker comprises two rigid plates preferably gridded, with a permanently charged dielectric membrane stretched between them. In the case of a microphone, vibrations of the diaphragm cause varying potential differences between the plates and in the case of the loudspeaker, varying potential differences across the plates cause the diaphragm to vibrate. The diaphragm is composed of one of the following substances which retain their charges for long periods, e.g. polythene, cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetobutyrate, dichloroethylene polysulphide, benzylcellulose or polymers of vinyl acetate. The diaphragm may be charged to a potential of 10,000 to 15,000 volts either by contact with a source of high potential or by friction.
