610,178. Delivering fuel to furnaces. CHARLTON, T. S., and DUNSTONE, D. Q. March 29, 1946, No. 9810. [Class 78 (i)] A mechanical stoker comprises a stationary fuel container 10 having an upper feed opening 13 and a lower discharge opening 14, a closure member 24 mounted for to-and-fro movement for alternately exposing and closing the discharge opening, a fuel receiving scoop 37 also mounted for to-and-fro movement below the discharge opening, means for operating the closure member and scoop relative to one another so that the scoop, while being filled, moves slowly on its rearward stroke as the closure member moves slowly on its forward stroke to the closing position, the filled scoop then moves forward with a quick action to eject its contents as the closure member moves rearwardly to expose the discharge opening, the empty scoop then taking up the filbing position again. A pair of levers are pivotally mounted on a shaft 20, one at each side of the container 10. Each lever has a pair of depending arms 22, 23 carrying at their extremities the arcuate closure member 24. The levers 21 are also provided with arms 25 engageable with cams 26. Tension springs 33 are connected to lugs 34 on each of the arms 23. When the arms 25 engage the cams 26 the levers 21 swing the member 24 about the axis of the shaft 20 against the constraint of the springs 33. The scoop 37 is carried by similar spring-loaded kick-levers 35 having arms 38 to engage the cams 26. To vary the size of the discharge opening 14, a member 46 is provided in slidable engagement with the periphery of the container, and is operable by rack-and-pinion mechanism 47, 48. The springs 33, 40 are held in adjustable anchorages, 32, 41 so that their tension may be varied.
