Abstract
677,929. Delivering liquids or powdered materials in measured quantities. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., ELLIOTT, H. E., SMITH, F. R., and PRATT, J. W. March 2, 1951 [March 3, 1950], No. 5404/50. Class 106(v) [Also in Group II] In a machine for mixing potato powder and water, measured volumes of these materials are delivered simultaneously under gravity from a powder hopper 3 and a water tank 5 into the mixing vessel. The measuring devices are controlled by a common operating lever, Fig. 1 (not shown) which is coupled by means of a link 31, and pawl and ratchet mechanism 21, 23, 27 to a four-compartment pocket wheel 13 at the bottom of the powder hopper 3, the arrangement being such as to rotate the pocket wheel through one quarter of a revolution when the operating lever is depressed. The operating lever is coupled also to a rod 55 which extends axially through a measuring cylinder 45 within the water tank 5. Collars 57, 63, are secured on the rod 55 and between the collars, slidably mounted upon the rod, are valve members 59, 65, which are urged in opposite directions by a compressing spring 71. When the operating lever is moved to deliver a charge of materials to the mixing vessel, the rod 55 is lifted so that the valve member 59 closes an inlet 50 to the cylinder 45 and the valve member 65 opens a discharge outlet 69. When the operating lever is allowed to return to its original position, the rod 55 moves downwardly, thereby first closing the outlet 69 and then opening the inlet 50 so that water flows from the tank 5 to fill the cylinder 45 ready for the next operation of the lever. A vent 61 from the cylinder 45 extends to above the level of the water in the tank 5.
