Abstract
609,398. Linear-dimension gauges. JACK & HEINTZ, Inc. March 13, 1946, No. 7800. Convention date, Sept. 11, 1945. [Class 106 (ii)] An electrical measuring instrument for measuring the radial clearance of ball-bearings within the inner and outer race of a bearing assembly comprises a shaft 2 with a lower bevelled portion 4. Surrounding the shaft is a hollow collet, provided with vertical slots 6 forming tongues 7. Surrounding the collet is a member 8 rigid with the base 1 with equal-sized slots 10, each to receive a separate ball 13. The inner race 11 of the assembly lies between the collet tongues 7 and the ball separator 8, and the outer race 12 surrounds the lower portion of the separator 8. The tongues 7 are pressed downwardly over the levelled portion 4 of the shank to keep the inner race 11 in position by means of a pneumatically controlled rod 14. Pneumatic cylinders 33, 36 with pressure members 39, 40 are alternately applied on opposite sides of the outer race 12. A stylus 28 pivotally mounted at 29 is in contact with the outer race and any displacement will cause it to alter the position of the armature 27 of an electrical pick-up device, such as described in Specification 601,053, causing unbalance in the electric circuits.
