609,114. Potato &c. peelers. MATTES, N. Feb. 24, 1947, No. 2495/46. [Class 28(ii)] In a potato &c. peeler in which a potato, pressed on to a hand rotated spike 4 is peeled by a knife 13 acting as in a turning lathe and in which the knife is moved in an approximate semi-circular arc by being mounted on a plate 17 which is slowly rotated about a pivot 18, by a link 19 coupled to the screwed spindle 2, an enclosed channel to lead the peel away is formed by the curved knife and its thickness gauge 14, which is adjustably mounted on the knife holder 15. The knife bracket is pivoted at 16 where a spring urges it towards the potato, and allows the bracket to be pushed away to allow clearance to stab a potato on the spike. The spindle 2 moves axially when rotated by the handle 3, by engaging a half nut segment 8 held up to a spindle by a spring 9A. To reset the machine, the half nut is depressed by a fork and push-button 10 whereupon a spring on the axis of the pivot 18 is free to rotate the knife &c. back to axial alignment with the spindle. This movement also pushes the coupled link 19 back to slide the spindle 2-6 axially back to starting position. The flat part of the spike 4 is stiffened by flanges 21, 22 upstanding thereon and bent in the direction of rotation.
