In a turning lathe type of potato peeler in which a peeling knife 48 follows the contour from one end to the other, of a potato &c. which is spiked on a hand rotated spindle 18, and in which the knife 48 is spring pressed against the potato surface and is also moved in a horizontal arc roughly corresponding with the potato contour, the arcuate travel of the knife, which is derived from the handle 20 through bevel gears 24, 28, is disconnected at the end of peeling by pulling out a knob 36 which pulls a worm 33 axially away from its driven worm quadrant 34 so that the radial arm 40 carrying the knife 48 can be rotated back by hand around its pivot shaft 35 to reset the knife position for the next potato to be peeled. Release of the knob 36 allows a spring 38 to slide the worm into reengagement with the worm quadrant 34. A spring 45, Fig. 3, allows the arm 42 carrying the knife to be rocked about 41 to allow room for impaling a fresh potato on the spike 21. The spike 21 is pointed and has strengthening flanges 22. The arm 42 which carries the knife 48 has a tail 47 to engage the arm 40 and so prevent the spring 45 from pressing the knife in too far and so prevent the knife from fouling the spike 21. The knife 48 is located above the plane of the spike 21. Fig. 6 shows the knife 48 with an upper curved guard 49 to limit the penetration of the knife. The peel passes between 48 and 49 through an exit 54.
