Abstract
608,962. Protective arrangements. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and HOLBROOK, H. S. Sept. 14, 1945, No. 23753. [Class 38 (iv)] Transient over-voltage protection for apparatus connected to a conductor 2 carried by a bushing or other insulator 1 is provided by series-connected spark-gaps A, B, the intermediate electrodes 4, 5 of which are carried by the insulator and connected to a stress equalizing tapping on a resistance potential divider connected between the conductor 2 and earth 3 and which may be constituted by a semi-conducting glaze on the insulator. Under impulse conditions the stress distribution between the gaps is disturbed due to capacity between the intermediate electrodes and the conductor or earth, so that speedy breakdown of the gaps is ensured. This capacity may be increased by a metallized coating or metal collar 7 on the insulator and connected to the intermediate electrodes. In the case of a post-type insulator, the collar 7 may co-operate with a portion of the conductor 2 or earthed part 3 extending into a closed bore in the insulator.
