Abstract

608,590. Metal-vapour discharge apparatus. BANKS, G. B. March 9, 1945, No. 5986. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] In a mercury-arc discharge'tube of the kind in which an igniter electrode dips into the cathode pool and particularly of the kind described in Specification 608,589, the mercury pool includes as an admixture a material of low work-function such as sodium, barium, potassium or caesium to reduce the ignition potential. Preferably, sodium metal is used and added to the mercury as a few parts in a million. The admixture material prepared in a vessel in communication with the tube is absorbed by running the mercury into the vessel and then returning it to the main tube which is then sealed off.
