[Class 86] An agitator consisting of a disc 10, Fig. 1, of flexible material secured to a spindle 2 is supported by the stopper 1 of a flask or other receptacle, for rectilinear reciprocation with or without rotation by the action of a finger operated knob 9 with or without a return spring 7, the disc 10 being sufficiently flexible to be deformed by the resistance to said movement of the substances being treated. The spring 7 is contained in a casing 6 screwed on the lower part of the stopper 1 and acts upon a washer 8 secured to the spindle 2. A helical movement may be transmitted to the agitator by a simple pressure on the knob 9 by providing a threaded socket 11 in the stopper 1 and a coacting pin 12 integral with the spindle 2. In an alternative construction the return spring 29, Fig. 4, is mounted on the spindle 24 between the stopper and the operating knob. A steel disc 26 covered by a rubber washer 30 is secured to the spindle 24 and a steel disc 27 similarly covered is contained in a recess 28 and is slidable on the spindle under the action of the return spring. During reciprocation of the spindle the discs 26, 27 alternately block the passage through the stopper against the escape of the materials under treatment. In a further construction the agitator spindle may be hollow for feeding materials therethrough, and the operating knob may be interlocked with the stopper when the agitator is not in use.
