Abstract

In a method of applying and adhering a metallic coating to a vitreous silicious support a homogeneous intermediate layer of an adhesive metallic compound is deposited on the support and a metallic layer deposited thereon. The adhesive metallic compound is a metallic oxide, a metallic sulphide, silver chloride or magnesium fluoride. The intermediate layer may be invisible transparent and without optical effect or may be thick enough to produce optical effects. The metallic oxides or sulphides may be those of silver, aluminium, tin, magnesium, zinc, thorium, the rare earth metals, cadmium, antimony, bismuth, mercury, copper or arsenic and may be deposited by chemical deposition, thermal evaporation or sputtering or the oxides may be formed in situ by depositing the metal and then oxidizing. The coating metal may be aluminium, silver, chromium, copper or rhodium and may be deposited by chemical deposition, thermal evaporation or spraying. Specifications 605,872 and 605,889 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of glow discharge in an oxidizing atmosphere to oxidize metals to oxides and also the use of lead compounds in the intermediate layer. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
