Abstract
A transparent multi-layer coating of uniform thickness is formed by thermal evaporation on a transparent siliceous (e.g. glass) body by successively depositing a smooth base layer, an adhesive layer of metallic oxide and a metallic layer. A second adhesive layer may be deposited on the metallic layer and a final protective layer then applied. The base layer may consist of MgF2, ZnS, SiO, SiO2, Al2O3, TiO, TiO2, ZrO2 or ZrSiO4; the adhesive layer(s) may consist of Fe2O3; the metallic layer mhay be of Au, Ag or Cu; and the protective layer may be of SiO2. Electrodes are provided to contact marginal surface portions of the metallic layer in order that the article may be heated e.g. to de-ice a windscreen. A coated glass sheet may be laminated to an uncoated sheet e.g. by means of polyvinyl butyral.
