Abstract

1,181,046. Metallizing glass fibres. NIPPON SHEET GLASS CO. Ltd. Oct.15, 1968 [Oct.18, 1967], No.48718/68. Heading C7F. A metal-coated glass fibre is made by applying to the fibre a solution containing a metal salt or complex so as to coat the fibre with the metal compound, converting the metal compound in situ to the metal oxide during or immediately after its application, so forming on the fibre a coating of metal oxide and thereafter reducing at least the surface of the metal oxide coating to the metal. The metal is preferably Cu, Sn, Zn, or Pb, and the reduction may be performed in a hydrogencontaining atmosphere at 350 to 1000‹C. In Fig.1, glass from melting tank 1 is drawn into fibres at 2, and sprayed at 6 with a solution of metal compound, which at the temperature of the fibres is decomposed to oxide, which is then reduced to metal by the flame of reducing burner 7, and the fibres are then bundled at 4 and wound on collet 5. The spraying solution may be an aqueous solution of copper nitrate, copper acetate, tin chloride, zinc acetate, zinc chloride, or lead nitrate. A novel glass fibre having a metal coating and an intermediate layer of an oxide of said metal, the total thickness of the composite coating not exceeding one micron, is described and claimed.
