Abstract
Ceramic insulating material is formed by sintering to compactness cerium dioxide either alone or with an alkali-poor admixture which may be clay, soapstone, or titanium dioxide. To prevent formation of a lower conductive oxide, the sintering may be carried out in an oxidising atmosphere and the product may be cooled slowly from the sintering temperature to below the temperature at which oxygen splits off, or the product may be after-heated at a lower temperature to absorb oxygen and obtain a thoroughly oxidised product.
