603,499. Heating feedwater. CLARKSON THIMBLE TUBE BOILER CO., Ltd., and FOUNTAIN, H. J. Oct. 22, 1945, No. 27719. [Class 64(i)] [Also in Group XXVII] Means for heating a fluid from the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine comprises a fluid conveying tube 12 having closelypitched fingerlike projections 13 extending into an exhaust manifold 5. The inlet and outlet of the tube 12 may be at opposite ends, one end being mounted with a stuffing box joint; alternatively, a further inner tube may convey the fluid to the far end of a closed tube, the fluid returning through the annular space between the tubes, which are readily removable. An equalising space 18 arranged between tangential exhaust passages 4 may have an outlet valve, opened by exhaust pressure through a bellows device, to by-pass the tube 12. The exhaust manifold may comprise a box-like structure having side passages with removable sides and inner walls with hollow thimble tubes, which may be opposed or overlap, for the fluid to be heated, which in a particular application described, is the feed water of an automatically-controlled oil-fired boiler.
