498,677. Heating steam boilers by waste gases. CLARKSON TRIMBLE TUBE BOILER CO., Ltd., and FOUNTAIN, H. J. July 8, 1937, No. 18993. [Class 123 (ii)] A steam boiler or water heater 1 adapted for, direct firing or heating by waste gases has a hollow air-cooled flap or valve 7 closing the waste gas inlet in the wall of the combustion chamber 2 during direct firing, to prevent damage to the waste gas conduit 6 and diverter valve 4. Valve 7 is pivotally mounted on a tubular hinge 8 through which air is introduced to one side of a perforated partition in the valve and withdrawn at the other end of the hinge pipe for supplying oil burners when employed. When open the valve occupies an enlargement of the conduit 6 out of the path of the main stream of waste gases. In another form the valve has internal baffles providing a circuitous flow for the cooling air.
