[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A variable speed drive for a shaft 32 comprises a main motor 10, 11, a control motor 20, 21, a variable ratio transformer 40 and epicyclic gearing 17, 30, 35, the control and main motors driving, respectively, the sun wheel 30 and outer toothed ring 17, whilst the shaft 32 is driven by the carrier 33 of the planet wheels 34. The main motor has a wound rotor and is cascaded with the control motor which is of the squirrel cage or permanent magnet motor type, through the transformer. Speed variation is effected by a wheel 51 which controls the transformation ratio. A reversing switch may be provided in the cascade connection.
