Abstract

An oil-in-water emulsion comprises a guanidine salt of a saturated open chain monocarboxylic acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms as the emulsifying agent. The preferred acid is a soap-forming saturated acid, such as stearic, lauric, palmitic, myristic and behenic acid. Alternatively the emulsifying agent may comprise the said guanidine salt in combination with an alkylolamine salt of a carboxylic acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms, such as triethanolamine stearate, or the salts of commercial mixtures of various ethanolamines and propanolamines or their alkylated derivatives with fatty acids, such as palmitic and oleic acids. The emulsion composition also desirably includes a small amount of a free alkylolamine such as triethanolamine. The emulsions find application as lubricants for air compressors. According to an example, a lubricant is prepared by adding guanidine carbonate dissolved in a minimum amount of water to stirred and heated mixture of stearic acid and water, followed by the addition of a pale mineral oil having a viscosity of 88-92 Saybolt at 210 DEG F., and aqueous triethanolamine, the temperature being maintained at 180 DEG F. or above until the emulsion is formed.ALSO:Guanidine stearate is obtained by adding guanidine carbonate, dissolved in a minimum amount of water, to a stirred and heated mixture of stearic acid and water.ALSO:An oil-in-water emulsion suitable as a flotation oil comprises a guanidine salt of a saturated open chain monocarboxylic acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms as the emulsifying agent. The preferred acid is a soap-forming saturated acid, such as stearic, lauric, palmitic, myristic and behemic acid. Alternatively the emulsifying agent may comprise the said guanidine salt in combination with an alkylolamine salt of a carboxylic acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms, such as triethanolamine stearate, or the salts of commercial mixtures of various ethanolamines and propanolamines or their alkylated derivatives with fatty acids, such as palmitic and oleic acids. The emulsion composition also desirably includes a small amount of a free alkylolamine such as triethanolamine.ALSO:An oil-in-water emulsion suitable as an insecticide spray or cosmetic base comprises a guanidine salt of a saturated open chain monocarboxylic acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms as the emulsifying agent. The preferred acid is a soap-forming saturated acid, such as stearic, lauric, palmitic, myristic and behemic acid. Alternatively the emulsifying agent may comprise the said guanidine salt in combination with an alkylolamine salt of a carboxylic acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms, such as triethanolamine stearate, or the salts of commercial mixtures of various ethanolamines and propanolamines or their alkylated derivatives with fatty acids, such as palmitic and oleic acids. The emulsion composition also desirably includes a small amount of a free alkylolamine such as triethanolamine.
