Abstract

An oil composition for fat-liquoring hides, skins or furs (see Group VIII) includes a leather-treating oil and a cationic surface active base compound (e.g., in a proportion of 5-50 per cent.) comprising a derivative, alkylated with a dialkyl sulphate containing 2, 3 or 4 carbon atoms, of an amino-amide or of a gloxalidine cyclised therefrom, the amino-amide having the general formula R1-CO-(NH-CH2-CH2)n-NH-R2, where R1 represents an aliphatic chain containing at least 7 carbon atoms, R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a 1 to 3 carbon alkylol group, and n is 2 or 3 when R2 represents hydrogen, or 1, 2, or 3 when R2 represents an alkylol group. Suitable leather-treating oils are neat's-foot oil, peanut oil, blown peanut oil, blown mustard seed oil, sperm oil, wool grease, herring oil, cod oil, and mineral oil. From 5-20 per cent. of a fatty acid ester, e.g., butyl oleate, may be included. The base compound is prepared by heating together at 180 DEG -210 DEG C a fat or fatty acid having at least 8 carbon atoms and a polyalkylene polyamine, alkylene alkylol polyamine, or polyalkylene alkylol polyamine (see Group IV). Heating to 300 DEG C gives the glyoxalidine compound. Specification 524,847 is referred to.ALSO:A cationic surface active base compound comprises a derivative, alkylated with a dialkyl sulphate containing 2, 3 or 4 carbon atoms, of an amino-amide or of a glyoxalidine cyclised therefrom, the amino-amide having the general formula R1-CO-(NH-CH2-CH2)n-NH-R2, where R1 represents an aliphatic chain containing at least 7 carbon atoms, R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a 1 to 3 carbon alkylol group, and n is 2 or 3 when R2 represents hydrogen, or 1, 2 or 3 when R2 represents an alkylol group. The base compound is prepared by heating together at 180-210 DEG C. a fat or fatty acid having at least 8 carbon atoms and a polyalkylene polyamine, alkylene alkylol polyamine, or polyalkylene alkylol polyamine. Heating to 300 DEG C. gives the glyoxalidine compound. Peanut oil, oleic acid, ricinoleic acid, lauric acid, stearic acid, and palmitic acid are examples of fats and fatty acids, and diethylene triamine, ethanol ethylene diamine, ethanol diethylene triamine, and triethylene tetramine are suitable polyamines. Alkylation with dimethyl, diethyl, or methyl ethyl sulphate is carried out at below 60 DEG C. The compounds are incorporated with oils used for fat-liquoring hides and skins (see Group VIII).
