Abstract

An emulsifiable fat-liquoring composition for leather comprises a mixture of (i) a raw oil, which may be either a mineral oil, a fatty oil, or a mixture of such oils, (ii) an anionic surface active agent comprising a "sulphonated" (sulphated) fatty oil, either alone or mixed with a "sulphonated" aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, (iii) a non-ionic surface active agent consisting of an ester of a polyethylene glycol, of average molecular weight 200-300, with an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid with a carbon chain length of 8 to 18, either alone or mixed with a similar ester in which the polyethylene glycol has an average molecular weight of 300-400 and the acid carbon chain length is 12 to 22, (iv) a cationic surface active agent comprising an alkylated, or cyclized (to a glyoxalidine) and alkylated, derivative of an amino amide of the general formula R1CO(NHCH2CH2)n NHR2, wherein R1 is an aliphatic chain of at least 7 carbon atoms, R2 is hydrogen or an alkylol group with 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and n is 2, 3, or 4 when R2 is hydrogen, and 1, 2 or 3 otherwise, and (v) water. Raw oils, which may be used separately or in admixture, include moellon, 28 DEG B<\>ae paraffin oil, white and yellow mineral oils, rice bran oil, neatsfoot oil, sperm oil, fleshing grease, castor oil, herring oil, and cod oil, and are included in amounts of 30-70 per cent, but preferably 45-55 per cent, of the composition. The anionic surface-active "sulphonated" oils may be "sulphonated" sperm, neatsfoot, cod, herring, or whale oils, or "sulphonated" tallow, and may be mixed with, for example, "sulphonated" oleic acid or coconut oil fatty acids. The "sulphonated" oils are present in amounts of 25-50 per cent, preferably 30-40 per cent, of the final mixture. Preferably the SO3 content of these oils is in the range 4-10 per cent, and the water content may be up to 25 per cent. The polyethylene glycol esters may be either the mono- or the di - esters; several examples are given, but a preferred mixture is one of polyethylene glycol (200) monolaurate and polyethylene glycol (400) monolaurate. In such mixtures the polyethylene glycol (200) ester should comprise not less than 40 per cent of the total of the non-ionic esters, and preferably comprises 50-60 per cent. The alkylated cationic amino-amide derivative is made by the condensation of a polyalkylene uolyamine, an alkylene alkylol poly - amine or a polyalkylene alkylol polyamine, which may contain 2-4 amino groups, with an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid with o carbon chain length greater than 8 and preferably 8-24, followed by alkylation of the product; several examples are given. These cationic compounds are present in 2-10 per cent, preferably 2-4 per cent, concentration of the final mixture. A preferred example of such a compound is that derived from oleic acid and N - aminoethyl ethanolamine. The components of the composition may be mixed in any order, suitably at a temperature slightly above room temperature, but if a cloudiness occurs, this may be dissipated by the incorporation in the final mixture of 0.5-2 per cent, preferably 0.5-1 per cent, of 30 DEG B<\>ae sodium hydroxide solution. Numerous examples are given, some of which describe the treatment of leather with compositions according to the invention.
