Abstract

A fuel oil composition comprises a fuel oil, i.e. a normally liquid hydrocarbon, e.g. a petroleum distillate having an initial boiling-point above 400 DEG F. and including light fuel oils, gas oils used in diesel engines, and heavy oils used in furnaces, and an additive composition comprising from 10 to 50% by weight of an alicyclic compound of iron and from 50 to 90% by weight of a detergent. Preferred alicyclic organic compounds are those of cyclodienes, especially cyclopentadiene and dicyclopentadiene, e.g. iron cyclopentadienyl. Suitable detergents are polymers and copolymers of esters of alcohols with unsaturated organic acids, e.g. monoesters of unsaturated dibasic acids, and alkoxy derivatives thereof; copolymers of methacrylates and amino alcohols; derivatives of acrylic and methacrylic acids; derivatives of alkyl phenols and phosphosulphurized alkyl phenols; the addition product of alkylene oxide and the acid reaction product of a hydrocarbon and a phosphorus sulphide; amines such as ethanolamine, triethanolamine and ethylene diamine; salts of amines with naphthenic, petroleum sulphonic or fatty acids; and sodium and calcium petroleum sulphonates. In an example, iron cyclopentadienyl is employed with triethanolamine petroleum sulphonate as detergent.
