Abstract

Salts of hydroxylated amines are prepared by reacting together, with or without the application of heat, a hydroxylated amine of the glucamine type or an aqueous solution thereof, and a carboxylic, sulphonic or sulphonated carboxylic acid containing at least 8 carbon atoms in the molecule. The carboxylic acid may be prepared in situ by the saponification of a glyceride. Suitable hydroxylated amines, which may be prepared by hydrogenating the product of the interaction of a monosaccharide and ammonia or a primary or secondary alkylamine or aralkylamine, include glucamine, xylamine, methyl glucamine, ethylglucamine, arabinamine, mannamine, galactamine, n-butylglucamine, iso-butylglucamine, lauryl glucamine, methylxylamine, ethylxylamine, butylxylamine, and dimethylfructamine. Suitable acids include oleic, stearic, lauric, behenolic, hydroxystearic, elaidic, erucic, brassidic, eleostearic, stearolic, linolic, linolenic, behenolic, iricinoleic acids, coconut oil acids, chinawood oil acids, castor oil acids, sulphated alcohols such as lauryl and stearyl sulphate, crude sulphonated castor oil, sulphonated fish oil, sulphonated mineral oils, alkyl naphthalene sulphonic acids, sulphonated oxidized mineral oils, mahogany sulphonic acids, sulphonated abietenes, hydroxysulphonic acids, abietic acid, resin of high acid number such as polyhydric alcohol-polybasic acid condensate in products, and acid phthalic esters of fatty glycerides. The salts may be used as detergents, emulsifying agents for insecticides, emulsifyiing agents for waxes in polishing and water-proofing compositions, cosmetics, shaving creams, shampoos and in the preparation of soluble mineral oils and textile lubricants. In examples (1) oleic acid is reacted with glucamine; (2) stearic acid is reacted with xylamine; (3) oleic acid is reacted with methylglucamine and (4) crude sulphonated castor oil with glucamine.
