Abstract

601,636. Electrolytic surface treatment of aluminium and its alloys. COMPAGNIE DE PRODUTTS CHTMIQUES ET ELECTROMETALLURGIQUES ALATS. FROGES, ET CAMARGUE. Oct. 24, 1945, No. 28064. Convention date, Nov. 11, 1943. [Class 41] Adherence of anodically-formed oxide layers on aluminium or its alloys, particularly wire or strip coated by continuous passage through a bath at a current density of at least one hundred amperes per square decimetre, is promoted by heating to a temperature between 100‹ and 600‹ C. for a period of some minutes up to several hours. The temperature chosen depends on the wire radius, and the duration upon both the wire radius and the total quantity being treated. Heating may be effected in air or a gas, or in a bath of oil or a salt or a mixture of salts. The articles may be further treated by dyeing, pore-filling, impregnation, &c. In an example, a wire of 99.5 per cent aluminium, 1 mm. in diameter, was oxidized for 30 seconds at a current density of 180 amps/sq. dcm. in a bath containing 45 per cent sulphuric acid and 3 per cent alkaline chlorides. It was then heated for one hour at 300‹ C., after which it could be wound upon a mandrel as small as 10 mms. in diameter without scaling.
