Abstract
600,111. Furnaces. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., and SPARKS, C. H. Oct. 1, 1945, No. 25414. [Class 51(i)] In a furnace wherein the fuel is fed to the grate 8 by a sprinkler 6, the ash is removed to a pit 10 by a transverse drag member 13 which is so shaped that, during its movement towards the rear of the grate, a cleaning action is exerted on the fuel bed, and when moving towards the front of the grate, a dragging action is exerted on the ashes at the bottom of the fuel bed. The member 13 is formed with a slightly inclined rear face 14, and a steeply inclined front face 15, and is dragged over the grate by a chain, or chains, 16 which runs in a groove in the grate, the chain substantially filling the groove and sealing it against entry of ash. The chain is trained over sprockets 17, 18 and is driven by a chain 19 driven by a reversible electric motor through reduction gearing. The member 13 is normally housed beneath the arch 9. When ash is to be removed it is moved to the rear of the grate and is then returned to the front. When the ash is positioned over an independently controlled air supply compartment 12, the member 13 comes to rest to permit the ash to be burnt completely. The member 13 then moves further to the front and pushes the ash into the pit 10. The air pressure in the compartment 12 is greater than that in the main compartment 11. The reversal of the motor and its stopping and starting when the ashes are above the compartment 12 may be automatically effected, and an indicator, showing the position of the member 13 on the grate, may be provided. In the case of a wide sectionalized grate, each section may have a separate member 13, and the members may be operated simultaneously or separately. The member 13 may be moved from the rear to the front of the grate by an endless chain driven unidirectionally, openings at the ends of the furnace for the passage of the member 13 into and out of the furnace, and sealing means for the openings, being provided.
