600,099. Recording-apparatus. WATSON, C. D., and KEIL, D. R. M. Sept. 29, 1945; No. 25363. [Class 106 (iv)] Means for indicating'the degree of lost-motion between an operating member and a second member indirectly operated thereby comprises a continuously movable chart, means for recording on the chart the motion of the operating member and the change of relative position of the two members, and means for marking a time base on the chart. Paper 8, which is chemically treated or coated with wax, is fed from a spool 7 over a platen 10 and a feed roller 12 to a spool 13, the spool 13 being driven through gearing from a motor 17 at a slightly greater rate than the feed roller 12 so as to maintain the strip taut, a friction clutch on the spool 13 allowing the necessary slip. A cable 43 runs from the operating member 3a over pulleys 44, 39, 45, 47, 46 to the operated member 3b, movement of the cable rotating the pulley 39 and its associated pulley 37 to drive a further cable 35 to move a carriage 33 and needle 34 to trace a line 59 representing the movement of the operating member. Lostmotion in the connection between members 3a, 3b increases the tension in the cable 43 to pull the pulley 47 against spring action and to rock a lever 28, whereupon a further needle 30 traces a line 58 representing lag or lead. A fixed needle 41 traces the datum position of zero lag, and a solenoid 54 operates a needle to indicate increments of time.
