Abstract

599,045. Shaft couplings. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and CLAPHAM, R. A. Sept. 19, 1945, No. 24281. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a turbine shaft coupling allowing limited axial movement, end thrusts on the shafts are balanced by hydraulic pressure centrifugally generated in a channel formed between flanges on the shafts. The shaft 7 of a turbine 1, subjected to a mean thrust in the direction P has a sleeve 12 splined thereto which has a flange 23 and a cylindrical portion 24 having internal teeth 13. The shaft 15 of a compressor 2, subjected to a mean thrust in the direction X has a sleeve 14 splined thereto which has a flange 25 carrying on one side teeth engaging with the teeth 13 and on the other side a seal 27. A channel 28 is thus formed between members rigid with the shafts 7, 15. Oil admitted to the trough 28 is subjected to centrifugal action to produce hydraulic pressure on the flanges 23, 25 to balance the end thrusts X, P, the level of the oil being kept constant by the bleed hole 29.
