Abstract

819,248. Shaft-couplings. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. May 17,1957 [May 17, 1956], No. 15482/56. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] An axial-flow pump (not shown) is driven from a shaft 28 through an intermediate shaft 24. The drive is transmitted through splines 26, 27, and the axial thrust produced by the pump rotor is transmitted to a thrust ball-bearing 44 through the engagement of partspherical flanges 30, 31 which are formed with radial slots to facilitate assembly. The shaft 28 is inserted into the bell-shaped end of the shaft 24 with the lands between the radial slots in the flange 31 aligned with the radial slots in the flange 30 and with the splines 27 on shaft 28 aligned with the spaces between the splines 26. The shaft 28 is then pushed, to compress spring 28a, so that splines 27 pass completely through splines 26, and rotated until the lands on flange 31 are aligned with the lands on flange 30, when the splines 26, 27 are allowed to re-engage. A similar arrangement is provided for connecting the other end of shaft 24 to the pump rotor.
