Abstract
598,866. Winches. ROGERS, F. Sept. 21, 1945, No. 24488. [Class 78(v)] A winch for use with a clothes rack comprises a one-piece drum having three equal flanges 9, 10, 11 of which the middle flange 10 is apertured at 13 to receive the - loop of the cord and one of the outer flanges has an internal ratchet wheel 12 co-operating with pawl 17. The drum is fixed on a spindle 7 and fitted with a handle 19. The backplate 1 may have a bracket 4 two support the spindle and the whole may be encased. The cord 15 may be secured in the aperture 13 of the centre flange by a transverse screw 14, Fig. 4, or a radial screw 20, Fig. 6, or by a spring clip 21, Fig. 7. The drum may be fitted with an internal expanding brake which operates automatically by screw and nut means in one direction only so that it assists the ratchet and prevents the lowering of the rack, which lowering is performed by unwinding the handle against the resistance of the brake. This brake may be spring- loaded and adjustable by means of a screw through the spindle.
