Abstract

911,952. One-way acting brakes. VICKERS AIRCRAFT HOLDINGS Ltd., and ARIS, A. S. June 20, 1961 [July 21, 1960], No 25468/60. Class 103 (1). [Also in Groups XXVI and XXX] A spring-loaded reel 11, Fig. 2, for taking up slack in lifting cables 12, is provided with a disc brake 24, 25 which is effective during pay-out only to assist in supporting a load being lifted, and limit the rate of lowering. The brake assembly is mounted on an annulus 27 attached to a disc 16 and is rotatable freely in the winding-up direction on a stud 17 and fixed central boss 32 but is prevented from rotating in the unwinding direction by means of an expanding coil spring friction clutch 33. The rotatable disc-brake member 24 is keyed on its outer periphery to the drum 11 and the brake pressure is permanently applied through springs 29 adjustably loaded through a nut 31 threaded on the annulus 27. The clutch may be released for withdrawal of the cables &c. by rotation of a central member 34 supporting the clutch spring 33 and having holes 341 for rotation by a tommy-bar.
