Abstract

1358512 Web tensioning MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 12 May 1972 [13 May 1971] 22505/72 Heading B8R The tension in a web 19 being unwound, e.g. by web driving rollers 36, (37), Fig. 1 (not shown), from a roll held on an arbour 12 is maintained substantially constant as the roll diameter decreases by a braking torque member 16 which applies a constant braking torque to the arbour to counterbalance the decreasing frictional force applied thereto by an arbour support and brake 14. The arbour 12 is keyed to the roll core 18 and is supported at either end in semicircular grooves in support blocks 22, 25 of the arbour support and brake 14, the grooves being lined with friction material 26. The braking torque member 16 comprises leaf springs 28, 31 which urge friction pads against the periphery of the arbour. As the roll diameter decreases, the web withdrawal force due to the weight of the roll on the support and brake 14 decreases whilst that due to the resisting torque measured at the roll periphery increases.
