Abstract

176,676. Ford, J. M. March 18, 1921. Ellipsographs.-An apparatus for the mechanical construction of curves, particularly intended for drawing conics, comprises a flexible inextensible cord E', E<2> passing through holes F<1>, F<2> in the drawing-table and also passing around drums A<1>, A<2> adapted to be simultaneously rotated, a marking-point H being provided on the cord. The drums are mounted loosely on the spindles of worms B', B<2> and can be clamped thereto by screws G', G<2>, the worms being simultaneously rotated by a worm-wheel C. The cord is maintained in tension by weights D', D<2> secured to cords L<1>, L<2>. When conics are to be drawn the drums A<1>, A<2> are of the same diameter, so that when both ends of the cord are wound up or unwound together the point H describes an hyperbola, while when one end is wound up and the other unwound an ellipse is drawn, the points F', F<2> being the foci of the curve. Seales J, K oh the drawing-surface indicate the eccentricity &c. of the curve to be drawn. The points F<1>, F<2> may be adjustable.
