[Class 44] A latch fastening adapted to retain a sliding door in alternative open or closed positions, comprises a pivoted operating lever and a pair of oppositely-directed latch heads, each mounted on an arm on its own side of the operating lever ; each arm is pivoted intermediate its ends and is subject on one side of its pivot to resilient means, e.g. a spring, tending to engage the latch head in its catch, and the arms are so disposed as to be engaged by the operating lever to release the latch heads on the sides of their pivots remote from the resilient means, and the points of engagement of the arms with the operating lever when the latter is moved are both on the same side of the pivot of the lever. As shown in Fig. 1, the operating lever 17 is pivoted at 16, and engages the ends 20 of the arms 19, 26, which are pivoted at 18, 18 and urged into engagement with the lever 17 by a spring 22 and which carry the latch heads 25. The pivot pin 16 works in a liner 15 forming part of a casing 23 fixed to the door 10. The arms 19, 26 are mounted within the casing on pivots 18 and the latch heads 25 are mounted on tubes or rods 24 secured to the arms 19, 26. The latch heads are preferably in the form of truncated cones of hard steel secured to the rods 24 by short bolts, and are thus readily rotatable to bring a new wearing surface into use, or replaceable. The catches are preferably hardened steel plates 27 clamped in casings 28. The operating lever 17 is integral with or fixed to the spindle 16 and an outside handle 34 is pivotally connected at 33 to a key-piece 31 which engages in a slot in the spindle, and is lifted away from the door against the resistance of a spring 35 when operating the latch from outside. The operating lever 17 is connected to a handle 38 by a pin-and-slot or other equivalent connection. Preferably, the connection is as described in Specification 511,623, comprising a spring-pressed plunger 39 sliding in the handle 38 and connected to the lever 17 by a pin 47. The pivot pin 44 of the handle 38 and the pin 47 are both preferably carried in self-aligning ball bearings so that the handle 38 need not be parallel with the lever 17.
