[Class 44] A door latching mechanism comprises a lock follower and a latch follower operated by separate handles, the lock follower serving as a housing for the latch follower or lying in part in the same plane, each follower being adapted to withdraw the latch when turned in one direction, and the lock follower also being adapted to lock the latch in the extended position when turned in the other direction. The latch follower 17 acts against a flange 18 of the runner plate 8 and is received within a recess 28, Fig. 7, of the lock follower 19. The latter may be of a form such that it acts directly upon the flange 18. Each follower has a cylindrical boss as at 21 which is journalled in a corresponding bearing in a wall of the lock casing, and mutual support is provided by a cylindrical boss on the latch follower which fits within a corresponding recess in the lock follower. Movement of the lock follower in an anticlockwise direction brings its cam surface 27 into abutment with a stop 20 on the runner plate to obstruct withdrawal of the latch bolt 3. Preferably, a leaf spring 36 acts upon one of the flats 41, 42 to urge the lock follower into one or other of its determined positions. The latch bolt 3 may be fixed directly to the runner plate 8 and may be formed with a forward part of width equal to that of the casing and slidable within slots in the casing walls.
