Abstract

598,206. Automatic control systems for supply circuits; rectifying. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 31, 1945, No. 22477. Convention date, Sept. 30, 1944. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] Voltage regulation of an A.C. to D.C. conversion system is achieved by a saturable reactor, the saturating winding of which is supplied with direct current controlled, e.g. by a carbon-pile regulator, so that changes in the D.C. output voltage result in magnified changes in current in the saturation windings. As shown, the A.C. supply 29 is connected to primary winding 10 of transformer 3, the secondary 2 of which is in series with full-wave rectifier 1 and the A.C. winding of saturable reactor 4. The rectifier output is smoothed by choke 6 and condenser 7 in parallel with bleeder resistance 9. Saturating winding 11 is in series with carbon-pile 16 and a D.C. source derived, for example, from a full-wave rectifier 13 energized from secondary 14 of transformer 15. Pressure is applied to the carbon-pile by bell-crank lever 17, subjected to the opposing moments of tension spring 19 and plunger and solenoid 20, 21. The solenoid 21 is energized from the potentiometer 22 connected across the D.C. output. Hunting is reduced by the action of transformer 24, in series with coil 21, the secondary 25 of. which reflects sudden changes of load voltage, across winding 11, which tend to neutralize the inductive effects of coil 11. In a modification, the saturable reactor is connected in series with the primary of transformer 3.
