598,154. Anti-freezing compositions. VERNON, W. H. J., WORMWELL, F, STROUD, E. G., and ISON, H. C. K Aug. 31, 1945, No. 22493. [Class 29] [Also in Group XVIII] Aqueous solutions of benzoates such as sodium and potassium benzoate are used in heat exchange systems as freezing point depressants, corrosion inhibitors, and also to prevent the dislodging of pre-existing rust and scale. They may be used alone or in combination with known freezing point depressants such as ethylene glycol, glycerine or mixtures of these. 30 per cent., 40 per cent. and 50 per cent. solutions or benzoates may be used for depressing the freezing point, and a concentration of 1¢ per cent. by weight of benzoate is mentioned as suitable for inhibiting corrosion.
