598,134. Grinding milling cutters. WATTERSON, A. Aug. 30, 1945, No. 22408. [Class 60] A milling cutter having cambered helical blades, for producing a concave surface on work, is ground by mounting the cutter in a holder arranged for rocking movement, relatively to a grinding-wheel running counter to the cutting edge, about an axis at right angles to that of the cutter, through an arc corresponding to the desired degree of camber, and combining with the rocking movement such controlled rotary motion of the cutter about its axis as will ensure that only one blade thereof is presented to the grinding-wheel at a time and is ground with uniform clearance angle throughout its length. A milling cutter 3 having cambered helical blades 4 to be ground by grinding-wheel 2 is mounted on a mandrel 5 carried by half-bearings 6 on a cradle 7 supported for rocking movement on trunnion bearings 8, 9 ; the rocking movement is imparted to the cradle 7 by means of a handoperated quadrant 23 fitted with stop screws 24 to limit the rocking. A standard 19 carries a gauge 17 for the grinding-wheel, and also a register pin 21, the end of which is shaped to fit snugly in the gap between two adjacent blades and also bears on top of one of these blades ; as the cradle is rocked, the milling cutter is thus partially rotated about its axis to keep the blade in contact with the grinder. In order to obtain the correct clearance angle, of approximately 7 degrees, the base-plate 1 has a line which is caused to coincide with the axis of the grinding-wheel, the bearings 6 for the mandrel being off this line. The apparatus may be arranged for power actuation.
