Abstract
111,433. Lumsden, T. May 16, 1917. Disk apparatus; cutting-edges, shaping and treating.-Consists of an attachment to a toolgrinding machine for " cross-pointing " and " blending " the cutting-edges of " spade " and other cutters used for boring out shells &c. The cutter, shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, has two cutting- edges, bevelled in opposite directions, which meet at 7; the bevel 9 at the sides is less than the bevel 8 at the end, and the object is to grind the bevels 8 and to blend those bevels into the bevels 9 along the curves 10. The tool 22 is clamped on the oblique upper surface of a rest 11, which is so mounted that it can be oscillated about an axis 17, at right-angles to the grinding-surface of the disk 13, and about an axis 15, parallel to such surface. In the position shown, crosspointing " is effected by rocking the rest about the stud 17, the inclination of the top of the rest to the grinding-surface in the plane of movement corresponding to the bevel 8. Blending is performed by oscillating the rest upon the vertical pin 15, the inclination of the rest when it has been turned round corresponding to the bevel 9. The oscillation of the rest about the stud 17 is limited by an adjustable stud 31; a gauge 30 for positioning the cutter is mounted on an arm 27 carried on a pivot so that it may be swung aside, and the rest may be moved towards and away from the grinding-disk by a screw 20 engaging a nut in the end of the stud 17.
