This is a divisional application of my pendin application Serial No. 423,517, filed December 18, 1941, now Patent No. 2,341,022, dated February 8, 1944, relating to a Grinding wheel form dresser; reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof.
This invention relates to a grinding wheel edge dresser, and more particularly to a dresser of this type adapted for use in conjunction with a thread grinding machine, wherein a work-piece is rotated and reciprocated on a suitable carriage past a rotatable abrasive grinding wheel with the cutting peripheral edge thereof cooperatively engaging transversely the surface of the workpiece for grinding a thread in the same.
From time to time the cutting edge of the grinding wheel is worn down, or is broken, or chipped requiring a re-truing or resurfacing.
It is the object of this invention to provide a novel grinding wheel form dresser adapted to produce various shaped surfaces in the edge of the abrasive grinding wheel for accurately grinding out various shapes of threads.
It is the still further object herein to provide a dresser for dressing the outer edge of the abrasive grinding wheel for providing thereon a curved surface, together with adjusting means for regulating the degree of curvature.
Other objects will be seen in the various arrangements of parts and combinations thereof as will be hereinafter described in connection with the appended drawing of which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the grinding wheel edge dresser.
Fig. 2 is a sectional bottom plan view thereof.
The above drawing illustrates merely preferable embodiments of the invention, it being expressly understood that it is not intended that the invention be limited thereby.
In the drawing, the grinding wheel dresser supporting housing II is vertically and reciprocably mounted along its dovetail vertical edge I2 with respect to the vertically movable grinding wheel support of a thread grinding machine, said support and machine not being shown herein inasmuch as no claim is made thereto.
The grinding wheel 20, however, is fragmentarily illustrated in Fig. 1, it being understood that means may be provided for effecting adjustment of housing II and the edge dresser B thereon with respect to said grinding wheel. Such adjustment, forming no part of the present invention is, however, illustrated in the above referred to parent application, of which the present application is a divisional part.
The dressing mechanism consists of a base member I21 with a longitudinally and centrally disposed semi-circular slot I28 therein. Base member I21 is secured to housing I I by a plurality of screws I29.
Member I21 longitudinally under-cut along lines I30 provides a'dovetail support for theslide I3I disposed thereon. A threaded screw I32 with a handle I33 is longitudinally disposed through a flanged portion I34 of the base member I21. Said screw threadably engages slide member I3I and is adapted to cause reciprocation thereof upon member I21.
A bifurcated member I35 is secured upon said slide at points I36 and is adapted to move therewith. A diamond supporting slide member I31 is slidable disposed within said bifurcated memher and is adapted for reciprocable movement therein with its bottom surface resting upon the upper surface of slide I31 with respect to which said slide I31 is transversely movable at right angles. 7
A screw member I38 with actuating means I39 is longitudinally disposed through support I35 and is in threaded engagement with slide I31 for .causing reciprocation thereof with respect to member I35. An opening is provided through the outer end of slide I31 and has disposed therein bearing member I38 for journaling a rotary diamond support 139' with means I40 on the end thereof for manually rotating the same.
An adjustable diamond mounting MI is disposed upon the end of rotary member I39 and is adapted to engage the outside peripheral edge of the grinding wheel 20 when brought into cooperating engagement with respect thereto.
Stops I42 and I43 are angularly disposed transversely with respect to the rotary member I39 and are adapted to alternately engage the upright member I44 which is secured to slide I31.
In operation for accomplishing a curvature upon the grinding wheel 20 member I39 is manually rotated causing the diamond mounting I4I to engage the outer surface of said grinding wheel. The stops I42 and I43 with adjusting means I44 and I45 are adapted to limit the rotary movement of member I39.
By actuating handles I33 and I39 it will be port I39 is partially removed from the bushing or bearing member I38 so as not to obstruct the interior of the housing I I or may be removed entirely. V 7

I claim:
A grinding wheel edge dresser comprised of;
a housing into which a grinding wheel is adapted to extend transversely, a manually adjustable horizontal slide on said housing, a manual vertically adjustable diamound mounting support I with a transverse opening therethrough carried p on said slide, a bearing provided within said opening, a manually rotatable diamond mounting journaled Within said bearing for arcuately dressing the outer periphery of a grinding wheel, an
