Abstract
598,096. Lifting-jacks. RICKARD, K. W. Sept. 11, 1945, No. 23365. [Class 78(iii)] [Also in Groups XXIX and XXXII] In a hydraulic, two part, telescopic ram for tipping gear, a spring-pressed ball valve K<2> in the piston H of the outer ram is relieved of spring pressure K<3> by the movement of a rod M actuated by the contact of a. ferrule M<1> thereon by the piston O of the inner ram at the end of its stroke whereby further movement of the ram is prevented, this ball valve also acting as a safety valve on excessive load or obstruction of the ram. A further ball valve A<4> is adapted to be operated mechanically by a rod B<2> to release the pressure and collapse the ram. The ram is mounted in a base A and is bored to receive a trunnion B which is welded at the ends. The trunnion is provided with a fluid pressure inlet D controlled by a non-return valve D4, and with an exhaust outlet E. The base is bored to receive a tube F and is flanged to-receive a tank G, the other end of the tank being connected to a flange G<8> on the tube F. A piston H slides in the tube F and is provided with a tubular piston rod J in which slides a further piston 0 with tubular rod P formed at the end with an eye P<1> forming a hinged connection to the truck. The piston H is recessed to receive a small spring-controlled piston K the tail rod K<1> of which presses on the ball valve K<2>. The rod M from the piston K passes through a tube N extending from the piston H and has the perforated ferrule M<1> at its end a sliding fit over the end of the tube N such that when the inner ram is fully extended a gland nut O<1> in the base of the piston strikes the ferrule M<1> and lifts the tail rod K<1> away from the ball valve K<2> and allows fluid pressure to pass through ducts H<6>, L, L<2>, the annular space between the tubes F and J and through holes F<4> to the tank G. The space above the piston K is vented by a duct H<7>, and holes P<1> in the piston tube P allows any oil leaking past the piston O to pass into the tube P and thence through the perforated ferrule Ml to the duct H'.
