[Class 108 (i).] In hydraulic means for tipping vehicle bodies the hydraulic means comprises a number of hollow pistons mounted telescopically in a cylinder which is mounted on a support for tilting movement about a horizontal axis, the innermost piston being connected to the vehicle body at its closed end and the pumping liquid being supplied to the lower end of the cylinder. An hydraulic cylinder 4 having integral therewith a fluid reservoir 7 to which a pump casing 10 is attached is pivoted about trunnions 6 in a frame 1 which is itself pivoted about trunnions 2 on the fixed frame 3 of the vehicle chassis. Three telescopic rams are provided two of which comprise spaced concentric shells 23, 24 and 34, 35 connected at top and bottom by rings. The third ram comprises a shell 43 having a stop disc 45 at the upper end to which is pivoted a head 47 trunnioned to the vehicle body 53. Fluid forced by the pump 11 enters the cylinder at the bottom and extends the rams which when extended to the desired limit cause ports 41 to be uncovered to 'allow the pressure fluid to return to the reservoir through the ports 41, space 38, ports 31, space 29 and ports 9. Means may be provided for limiting the tipping of the vehicle and comprises means brought into action when the hydraulic cylinder has attained a predetermined angle of tilt. In one form the cylinder may be connected to a lever through a flexible connection such as a chain, the lever being actuated on the tightening of the chain when the limit of tipping is reached and the lever being connected to a clutch to declutch the driving ,shaft of the pump. Fig. 10 shows another form also comprising chains 92 and levers 90. The fluid is forced past a non-return valve 82 to pass through the duct 14 to the rams. At the limit of tipping one or other or both of the levers 90 acted on by the chains 92 lift the valve 87 and place the pressure side of the pump into communication with the suction side by a port in the annular space 84. In another arrangement a valve may be caused to close a port on the suction side of the pump. The vehicle is brought back to normal position and the rams collapsed by means of valve 94 which places the pressure and suction ducts 14, 17 in communication.
