Abstract

In a telescopic hydraulic lifting cylinder comprising a hollow piston 14 slidable in an outer cylinder 1 and forming the cylinder for a piston 3, the latter if desired in turn acting as a cylinder for a further piston and so on, and wherein the annular space(s) 6 between the cylinders is/are filled with liquid whereby extension of all the pistons and cylinders occurs when liquid is supplied to the outer cylinder's pressure chamber 4 through a port 5, a differential piston 18 slidable in the piston 14 moves to allow fluid to flow from the pressure chamber 4 to the spaces 6, 9 in the event of leakage of fluid from the latter. If leakage has occurred retraction of the piston 14 produces an abnormally low pressure in the spaces 6, 9 which causes the differential piston 18 to lift against the counteracting force resulting from a rarefied space 15 beneath the piston 20. This lifting allows fluid to pass from chamber 4 through a port 17, past a ball 28 and through a duct 19 with a spring loaded ball 31 into the spaces 6, 9. <IMAGE>
