Abstract

363,632. Fluid pressure bra k e s. HOUPLAIN, G., 40, Rue Bargue, Paris. Sept. 16, 1930, No. 27626. Convention date, Nov. 2, 1929. [Class 103 (i).] Fluid-pressure brake mechanism of the kind comprising two pistons of which the smaller is first moved to take up the slack in the transmission, the second and larger being rendered operative subsequently comprises a small piston 9 the pistonrod 11 of which is connected to the transmitting mechanism and which is slidable in the tubular piston-rod 4 of the main piston 3. The central part of the piston 3 normally engages a seating on the end of the main cylinder 1 as shown, so that the inlet passage 2 for the compressed air is cut off from this piston but communicates through the passage 5 in the piston, with the piston-rod 4. When the compressed air is supplied to the passage 2, the small piston 9 therefore moves at first alone until upon contact of the brake shoes with the wheels, the pressure rises sufficiently to open a spring- loaded valve 22, thereby supplying also the chamber 8 of the cylinder 1. Clutch members 14 carried by the piston-rod 4 and normally held disengaged from a rack 12 on the piston-rod 11 by projections 21 on the cylinder 1 couple the pistons together upon initial movement of the piston 3. The application of the device to vacuum brakes is mentioned. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also a construction in which the cylinders 4, 8 are connected by an open passage formed in the wall of the cylinder 4 and terminating at a point which is passed by the piston 9 during its initial outward movement. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
