Abstract
596,535. Sliding door gear. PEARSON, D. A. July 30, 1945, No. 19418. [Class 65 (i)] Gear for controlling the operation of a sliding door 8 comprises a fluid-pressure cylinder 6 which moves with the door, a double-acting piston 5 which is fixed, and valve means controlled by the door handle 11 for venting the working spaces of the cylinder whenever the handle is moved into an operative position to open or close the door. The door is suspended from roller carriages 4 which travel on a track 3 carrying at one end a bracket to which the piston-rod 1 is secured. When the handle is rotated to either of the positions shown by dotted lines at A and B, valve ports 12, contained in a valve disc 11 secured to the handle, register with the lower ends of vent pipes 9, the upper ends of which are connected to opposite ends of the cylinder. Both ends of the cylinder thus being vented to the atmosphere the door may be moved freely. With the handle disposed centrally, the closed pneumatic system opposes a braking effect to the movement of the door. In a modification, the cylinder is fixed and the piston moves with the door, extensible or flexible connections being provided between the cylinder and the control valve.
