Abstract

897,393. Operating vehicle windows. DRAFFIN, E. P. March 31, 1959, No. 10878/59. Class 20(3) [Also in Group XXV] A motor-car window 5, Fig. 1, is raised and lowered from a power cylinder 15 having a piston rod 14, Fig. 2, pivotally connected to the window by a lever system 8-13, Fig. 1, valve mechanism 23 connecting in alternative positions a suction source with respective spaced ports 20, 28, Fig. 2, in the cylinder 15 to control the movement of the piston 16 and a latch pin 31a on the cylinder co-operates with groove 35 on the piston-rod 14 to releasably retain the window in a raised position pending operation of the valve mechanism to lower the window. To overcome the frictional resistance of the pin 31a in the groove 35, the pin, located in a bore 30 communicating with the port 20, is given, when the window is to be lowered, suction impulse, as the window is given a slight upward movement due to the same suction impulse acting on the left-hand side of the piston 16, thus releasing the weight of the window from the pin which is then withdrawn by the suction. Continued movement of the valve control mechanism 23 transfers suction to the right hand side of the piston 16 which moves to lower the window.
