Abstract

595,837. Aerials. STEVENS, A. H. (United Air Lines, Inc.). June 13, 1944, No. 11290. [Class 40 (v)] In a directional antenna comprising spaced loops 12, 13 carried on a rotatable metallic boom 17, the loops are slightly tilted with respect to the longitudinal axis of the boom, i.e. the planes in which the loops lie are not quite at right angles to the boom, in order to minimize boom eddy-current effects by taking into account the vertical component of such currents arising from the thickness of the boom. Tilting is effected in opposite directions, each loop normally being tilted inwardly towards the vertical axis of rotation of the boom. The loops are contained in split shields formed of metal tubes 14 with an insulating insert 16, the lower ends of the tubes fitting into apertures in the boom ends to which they are secured by means of bolts and flanges 20.
