Abstract

595,700. Plug cocks. AIRCRAFTINGS, Ltd., and COHEN, I. May 18, 1945, No. 12544. [Class 135] A rotary plug valve of the type wherein the plug is eased from its seat prior to opening and jammed thereon after closing by gearing, comprises a plug b, Figs. 1, 3, having on its larger end a projection h, which engages limit stops j, j<1> on the casing a, and diametrically opposite thereto a helically-toothed gear segment e which engages with a worm f. A spring n disposed beneath the small end of the plug acts through a ball o to lift the plug, and an adjusting screw m acting through a ball at the top of the casing serves to limit the lift. In operation, when the valve is in the fully-open position, the projection h is in engagement with the stop j and rotation of the worm to close the valve will move the projection towards the stop j which, when contacted, arrests the rotary movement of the plug in the fully-closed position. Further rotation of the arm imparts an axial thrust to the plug and jams it in its seat against the action of the spring. Initial rotation of the worm to open the valve removes the seating pressure, the spring then forces the plug from its seat whence further rotation of the worm will permit the opening of the valve. To prevent unintentional operation of the plug, e.g. by vibration, the worm spindle g may be formed with a square portion g<1> which fits a complementary hole in a conical bush r forced into a conical hole in the casing by a spring t. The bush is formed with notches r<1>, Fig. 4, which loosely engage tongues u<1> in a sleeve u secured to the hand wheel, the rotation of which in either direction causes a camming action between the notches and the tongues to release the coned surfaces for operation of the plug.
