Abstract

818,265. Screw-and-nut gearing. SPARK - LETS Ltd. Oct. 10, 1957 [Oct. 22, 1956], No. 32122/56. Class 80 (3). [Also in Group XXIX] An actuating device for an axially-movable valve spindle 18 of a single-beat lift valve 17 fitted in the outlet of a compressed gas container and held closed by gas pressure, comprises a pulley-like actuating member 37 rotatably held in a casing 27 by a cap 43, an actuated member 40 which is fitted with a stem 54, for abutting against the valve spindle, and has a squared end 51 slidably guided in splines 52 formed in the casing, and an intermediate member 38 coupled to the actuating member by a coarse screwthread and the actuated member bv a fine screw-thread of the same hand. A pin 47 which holds the stem 54 in place in the actuated member projects therefrom to form an abutment for shoulders 46 on the intermediate member to limit its rotational movement. In operation, when the pulley-like actuating member 37 is rotated by means of a pull cord fitted at 64 the friction of the coarse thread causes the intermediate member 38 to rotate and its fine thread moves the actuated member 40 axially with a large mechanical advantage to crack open the valve against gas pressure, continued rotation causes a shoulder 46 on the intermediate member to abut against the pin 47 of the actuated member and lock the two parts to. gether when the action of the coarse thread, with a lower mechanical advantage, rapidly, fully opens the valve against the reduced closing force of the gas. An indication that the actuating mechanism is set for operation is pro. vided by a coloured disc on the top face of the pulley which is visible through an aperture 78 in the housing cap, and the recess 63 in the actuating member which houses a ball on the end of the pull cord is so shaped that the pull cord is freed from the mechanism when it is actuated. A pin 44 in the actuating member co-operates with a stop in the actuating mechanism housing to limit its movement to one revolution. According to the Provisional Specification the differential actuating screw-threads may also be of opposite hand and also means may be provided for actuating the valve member directly.
