Abstract
559,643. Valves. GIGER, E., and BOPPART, E Jan. 15, 1942, No. 631. [Class 135] A valve device for delivering liquid to a container adapted to close automatically when the liquid in the container reaches a desired level comprises a lift valve opened by hand and retained in the open position by a mechanical or electro-mechanical catch device released when the desired level is reached by a diaphragm subject to a sub-atmospheric pressure produced by a nozzle device in the delivery conduit. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the valve member 4 co-operates with a flanged seat 3 held in place by a block 11 and by a ring 12 screwed in the main casing 1. The block 11 carries a discharge pipe 21 and is formed internally with a nozzle 13 supported by a spider 14. A spring-loaded valve 23 is mounted on an upward extension of the nozzle and co-operates with a seat on the underside of the ring 3 to ensure that at least part of the delivery passes through the nozzle 13. A chamber 15 surrounding the nozzle is connected by a passage 16 and pipe 17 to an orifice 18 adjacent the end of the discharge pipe and by passages 19, 20 to a chamber 31 below a diaphragm 32. The valve 4 is connected by a metallic bellows 6 to ring 7 held against a shoulder 9a by a plate 8 provided with a guide socket 8b for the valve spindle 42. A sleeve 43 slidably engages the valve spindle 42 and a guide 8a on the plate 8 and is held against rotation by a pin 44 engaging a slot in the guide. A cap 51 rotatably mounted on the casing is secured to a ring 48 having a screw-threaded engagement with the sleeve so that when a locking bolt 61 slidable in the sleeve is in engagement with a groove in the valve spindle rotation of the cap lifts the valve member. The locking bolt is pressed into engagement by a push-button 83 on a member 80, slidably mounted in a guide 85 and housing a spring 87 bearing on the head 92 of a pin 91 carrying a slider engaging a head in the locking bolt. The member 80 is held in its retracted position by a pivoted catch 36 engaging a shoulder 81. A yoke 33 having a pin 35 engaging a slot in the catch is secured to the diaphragm and is guided by a bail 34 passing through an aperture in a detachable cap 74. When the liquid reaches and seals the orifice 18 the sub-atmospheric pressure produced by the nozzle device depresses the diaphragm which releases the catch 36 and allows a spring 82 to move parts 80, 91, 64 and release the locking bolt 61 which permits the spring 10 to close the valve. The valve can be closed at any time by depressing the bail-piece 34. In a modification the sleeve is lifted by a spring- loaded lever in place of the screw mechanism. In a further modification the valve is opened by the pressure in the supply conduit when a cross-pin is lifted away from the end of the valve spindle. The cross pin is mounted in a slidable screwed ring held against rotation and engaged by a manually rotatable screwed threaded cap. The exterior of the cap has recesses for engagement with the locking bolt and is returned by a spring to the " valve closed " position when the catch is withdrawn. In the form shown in Fig. 4, an electromagnet 52 and armature 139 is interposed between the sleeve 43 and the valve spindle 42. The electromagnet is energized through a switch 136 actuated by the diaphragm 32. When the magnet is energized the valve may be opened by rotating a cap 51 having a screw-threaded engagement with the sleeve 43 and remains open until the circuit is broken by the sub-atmospheric pressure acting on the diaphragm 32.
