Abstract

864,281. Valves. CARFAGNA, A. Sept. 4, 1958 [Sept. 9, 1957 ; Dec. 5, 1957], No. 28408/58. Class 135. The spindle 4 of a wedge gate valve 1 is operated by an internal screw thread on a surrounding sleeve 8 provided with a doubleconed land 9 between upper and lower seats 12, 13 providing pressure seals additional to a gland 18 and packing rings 17, a locking device serving to keep the land 9 pressed against one of the seats 12, 13 in any operating position of the valve independently of the fluid pressure acting upon it. As shown the outer end of sleeve 8 carries a lock nut 19, the lower surface of which can be engaged by raising gland 18 and thus tensioning sleeve 8 to engage the upper sealing surface of land 9 against seat 12 in any position of the valve 1. In modifications, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the valve operating members comprise oppositely handed screw threads which serve to control the force between land 9 and its associated seating during opening and closing of the valve. Sleeve 8 may be subjected to the action of an internal spring (Fig. 3) which maintains a sealing force on land 9, and in addition the upper portion of the valve spindle head 6 and the lower portion of sleeve 8 may be formed with conical sealing surfaces which engage when the valve is fully open.
