595,427. Variable-pitch propellers. ENGINEERING & RESEARCH CORPORATION. March 15, 1945, No. 6598. Convention date, June 1, 1944. [Class 114] The pitch of an aircraft propeller is controlled by the dynamic air pressure exerted on a forward facing plate. The plate 100 exposed to the air pressure due to forward movement adjusts the position of the valve 56 against the face of the control spring 106. The valve controls pressure liquid flow to either side of the fined piston 22, thus moving the cylinder 20 to turn the blades 16. The characteristic of the spring is arranged so that the pitch is the optimum one for the linear speed at any instant. In a modification applied to pusher propellers, the plate 100 is enclosed in a rearward facing compartment to which air is led from a forward facing pipe.
